Dips

Gym (men) / Popular

Build pressing strength on parallel bars with shoulder-safe depth.

What coaches agree on

  • Your torso angle sets the emphasis: lean forward to bias the chest, stay more upright to bias the triceps.
  • Lower under control to roughly a 90-degree elbow bend, upper arm about parallel to the floor, deep enough for a full range of motion without pushing past what your shoulders can safely handle.

  • If you can't yet complete clean bodyweight reps, use an assisted-dip machine or a resistance band as a normal stepping stone while you build up strength.

Common mistakes

  • The most common execution error is letting the shoulder blades round forward and ride up toward the ears as you fatigue, so retract and depress them before you start and hold that position for the whole set to keep the joint stable.
