How to use a lifting belt

Gym (men) / Popular

When to wear a belt and how to brace against it.

What coaches agree on

  • Take a deep breath into your belly and brace your core out against the belt — that push against the belt is what creates supportive intra-abdominal pressure.
  • Save the belt for your heaviest sets on big compound lifts like squats and deadlifts, roughly 80% of your max or higher.

  • Position the belt low across your abdomen, above your hip bones and below your rib cage.

Common mistakes

  • Cranking the belt as tight as possible before taking a breath, leaving no room to expand into it — a well-set belt still allows a finger or two of room to breathe against.
  • Trusting the belt itself to protect the back instead of actively bracing against it — an unbraced belt gives no real support, and over-relying on it leaves the core undertrained.
