Front squat

Gym (men) / Popular

Squat with a front rack for quad emphasis and upright posture.

What coaches agree on

  • Drive your elbows up until your upper arms are roughly parallel to the floor — that builds the shelf across your shoulders that the bar rests on, whether you grip it fully, by the fingertips, crossed over, or with straps.
  • Set your feet slightly wider than shoulder width with your toes turned out, and feel your weight spread evenly across your big toe, little toe, and heel.

  • Take a full breath and brace your core hard before you unrack the bar, then hold that brace until you're through the hardest part of the rep.

Common mistakes

  • Sitting back into a hip-hinge like a back squat, instead of letting your knees travel forward, tips your torso forward and dumps the bar off your chest.
