Kettlebell swing

Gym (men) / Popular

Hinge and snap the hips to drive the bell.

What coaches agree on

  • Brace with a sharp inhale as the bell swings down, then exhale forcefully - almost like throwing a punch - as you drive your hips through at the top.
  • Snap your hips to full extension and squeeze your glutes and core hard at the top of every rep.

  • Keep your lats engaged so your arms stay packed against your torso throughout the swing.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the swing into a squat by bending the knees and dropping straight down rather than hinging back at the hips.
  • Muscling the bell up with the arms, turning the swing into a front raise, rather than driving it from the hips.
  • Letting the lower back round, especially when reaching down for the bell.
