Catching kicks

Muay Thai

Catch the body kick and counter or sweep.

What coaches agree on

  • Move with the kick as you catch it — step or shift away on impact instead of standing flat-footed, and you take most of the power out before you secure the leg.
  • Once you've got the leg, clamp it tight against your body — high in the armpit or against your sternum — so there's no gap for your opponent to rip it back out.

  • Lift the caught leg up high. It forces your opponent to hop on one leg and lose their balance, which sets up an easy sweep or strike.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching down early for the kick, especially a low kick, before it actually lands leaves your head exposed if the opponent fakes low and kicks high instead.
