Defending the teep

Muay Thai

Parry, catch and counter the push kick.

What coaches agree on

  • Catch the teep with both hands - one hand under the foot, one over the top - so your opponent can't strip or lift the leg free.
  • Take a small step back as the kick lands to soften the impact and pull your opponent off balance toward you.

  • You can also check a teep with a raised knee or shin, the same way you'd check a round kick, keeping your hands up to protect your face.

Common mistakes

  • Committing fully to a catch or parry the moment you see a teep coming, which drops your hands and opens your face to the punch or kick that follows when it turns out to be a fake.
  • Catching the leg and holding it straight against your chest instead of pulling it out to the side, which leaves your hands blocked and lets your opponent push off you or kick with their free leg.

Muay Thai Teep Defense Tips

Coach's take: Solid starting drill, but it stops right where it gets interesting - no follow-up once you've caught the leg.
