Transition to the net

Padel / Popular

Move forward together at the right moment, and when to retreat.

What coaches agree on

  • Communicate with your partner about where you are aiming and where they should cover, so you both move to the net together rather than just one of you.
  • Treat getting back to the net as your priority after being pushed back; you have a much better chance of winning the point from there than from the back of the court.

  • Finish your transition shot with your weight moving forward, so you are already heading toward the net instead of staying back on your heels.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting transition shots too hard and flat instead of with control and some backspin, which costs you the initiative and often the time to recover the net.
  • Charging forward to the net right after your lob or bajada without checking whether the shot actually earned it, instead of holding position when it fell short.
