Coordinate distance, angles, and partner spacing while attacking at the net.

What coaches agree on

  • Set your ready position at net around the second post, or one small step in front of it.
  • Read the point as it develops: step forward to attack when your opponent is stuck with a weak reply, and step back toward your base the moment you see them getting under the ball to lob.

  • Move sideways together with your partner based on where the ball is: whichever of you covers the corner or the line, the other slides across to cover the middle.

Common mistakes

  • Crowding the net (standing closer than your base position) leaves a big space behind you that is easy to lob into.
  • Hanging too far back, at or drifting toward the service line into no-man's-land, leaves a gap in front of you that opponents can hit down at your feet.
