What coaches agree on

  • Wait for the ball to drop as low as possible before you make contact - the longer you wait, the farther out and lower it travels, giving you the room and angle you need to get it around the post.
  • The moment you see the ball pulled wide, move to it quickly - a crossover step, cross-step, or lunge all work even though pickleball footwork usually favors a shuffle - and get low, since the ball will be arriving near the ground.

  • Recognize the setup before committing: the chance for an ATP comes from a sharply angled, shallow cross-court dink that pulls you well wide of your normal position, not just any dink.

Common mistakes

  • A common error is trying to overpower the shot - a big swing, an overhead-style stroke, a high topspin follow-through, or an ambitious curving spin around the post - when a short, controlled, low push is far more reliable.
