Stacking

Pickleball / Popular

Stack to keep both players on their stronger side.

What coaches agree on

  • Stack so your forehands cover the middle of the court — both forehands for a lefty-righty pair, or your stronger player's forehand if you're both right-handed.
  • Use a clear hand signal before the return — an open hand to switch, a closed fist to stay — so both partners know the plan.

  • Vary whether you actually switch from point to point so opponents can't predict and target whichever player is on the move.

Common mistakes

  • Losing track of whether your score is even or odd is a common mix-up that leaves a team standing on the wrong side, sometimes costing the point outright.
  • Rushing the return or serve — hitting it flat or short instead of high and deep — leaves no time to reach the new position, so the mover gets caught out of place and the opponent attacks the gap.
