Criss-cross

Pilates / Popular

The oblique twist from the classical mat order.

What coaches agree on

  • Rotate from your ribcage and waist, not your hips - keep your pelvis still and heavy on the mat as you twist from side to side.
  • Exhale as you rotate and extend the leg, then inhale as you pass back through center.

Common mistakes

  • Cueing 'elbow to knee' backfires - learners just flap their elbows back and forth instead of rotating through the core to bring the shoulder toward the opposite knee.
  • Pulling the head forward with the hands, instead of letting it rest heavy in them, turns the exercise into neck strain instead of ab work.
  • Letting the shoulder blades sink back to the mat and rolling down between each twist, instead of staying continuously curled up, breaks the connection the exercise is meant to build.
