Snowplough turns

Skiing / Popular

Steer both skis to link your first turns in a wedge.

What coaches agree on

  • Weight and press onto your outside ski (the downhill one) - that is what makes it grip the snow and carries you round the turn.
  • Point your toes and knees in the direction you want to go to steer the turn, keeping your upper body facing down the hill.

  • Flex your legs to absorb the pressure that peaks at the end of each turn, then extend and stand tall as you move into the next one.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back onto the tails of the skis instead of keeping your shins pressed forward into your boots, which throws you off balance.
  • Rushing the pressure change from one foot to the other instead of moving smoothly and gradually, which makes the turn jerky and hard to control.

Coach's take: More rubric than lesson — accurate technical language for the turn but doesn't show you how to build it.
