How to stop on skis

Skiing / Popular

Learn the snowplough stop and progress to a hockey stop.

What coaches agree on

  • Widen your snowplow to slow down or stop, and narrow it to speed up — the width of the wedge is what controls your speed on the slope.
  • Keep your weight forward with your shins pressed into your boots, hands up in front of you, and your eyes looking ahead, whether you're holding a snowplow or setting up a hockey stop.

  • For a hockey stop, turn both feet and skis quickly across your direction of travel while your upper body keeps facing down the hill, then roll onto your edges to grip the snow and come to a stop.
