Boxes and rails

Snowboarding / Popular

Get onto boxes and rails and slide them under control.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep your board's base completely flat against the box or rail for the whole slide, from the moment you land to the moment you ride away.
  • Start on small, low, ride-on features and work up to longer or higher hop-on rails only once you're consistently comfortable, repeating each stage until it feels easy.

Common mistakes

  • Riders jump onto the rail at too steep an angle, or land right at the start of it instead of the middle, and you can hear the difference — a loud bang or clunk instead of a smooth, quiet landing.
  • New riders often bend forward at the waist or stand too upright instead of staying stacked — knees bent, back straight, weight centered over the board — and end up sliding out on an edge or going off the far side of the feature.
  • Looking down at your feet instead of at the end of the box or rail throws off balance and causes riders to fall off before they reach the end.
