Heelside turns

Snowboarding / Popular

Turn on the heel edge without washing out or jutting.

What coaches agree on

  • Lead each turn with your eyes toward where you're headed next, and let your shoulders and hips follow them around.
  • Extend your front leg into the turn to stand the board up on its edge, but stop short of locking the knee straight.

Common mistakes

  • Riding too tall and stiff-legged on the heel edge instead of flexing the ankles, knees, and hips, which leaves you unstable and lets your weight drift back off the board until the tail slides out.
  • Only the hips lean out toward the heel edge while the shoulders and upper body stay upright, instead of the whole body leaning together as one line.

Coach's take: Good technical upgrade on the classic beginner heelside stance -- just wading through an ad for it.

SHORT TURNS

Coach's take: The heel-edge pressure cues here are genuinely sharp -- worth it even though it's part of a bigger topic.
