Ollie on a snowboard

Snowboarding / Popular

Load the tail and pop off the snow.

What coaches agree on

  • Shift your weight back and lift your front foot so the board slides forward beneath you, loading pressure into the tail, then spring off that tail to get airborne.
  • Once you're in the air, pull both knees up evenly to level the board out so you land on both feet at the same time.

  • Learn the motion on flat, mellow ground first, standing still or on a gentle slope, before adding speed, obstacles, or park features.

Common mistakes

  • A common mistake is springing off both feet at once like a basic hop instead of loading through the tail first, which gets far less height and can land you unevenly, one foot before the other.
  • A common mistake is looking down at your feet or board in the air instead of ahead to where you're landing, which throws off your balance and makes the landing harder.
