Butters

Snowboarding / Popular

Press on the nose and tail and spin flat on the snow.

What coaches agree on

  • Shift your hips and body weight over the nose or tail of the board — that shift alone is what flexes it into a press.
  • Learn the press on flat, barely-moving snow first, then take it to a mellow slope, and only add spins or airtime once that feels solid.

  • Practice on a softer-flexing board — it makes pressing into a butter noticeably easier than a stiff one does.

Common mistakes

  • Losing weight off the uphill edge while spinning a butter, so the downhill edge catches the snow and the trick ends in a fall.
