Riding the chairlift

Snowboarding / Popular

Load, ride and unload a chairlift with one foot strapped in.

What coaches agree on

  • Spend time practicing one-footed skating, gliding, and stopping on flat ground before your first chairlift ride.
  • Plant your free foot against the back binding (or a stomp pad) in the middle of the board for stability as you stand up to exit the chair.

  • Once you're gliding away from the chair, drag your free foot (heel or toe) in the snow to bring yourself to a controlled stop.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your board, hips, or shoulders turn to the side instead of staying square to your direction of travel is what causes most falls loading and unloading the chair.
