Passing Technique

Soccer (Individual Skills) / Popular

Strike accurate short and long passes with proper form.

What coaches agree on

  • Point your planting foot at the target before you strike — it's what steers the pass, short or long.
  • Use the right part of your foot for the job: the flat inside of the foot for short, accurate balls, and the top of the foot (laces) for longer, driven ones.

  • Follow through toward your target so the kicking foot finishes pointing where you want the ball to go.
  • For a long pass, strike underneath the ball with a full, flowing swing of the leg — that's what gives it the backspin and loft that make it easy for a teammate to control.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back and stabbing at the ball instead of staying over it makes the pass balloon up or bounce instead of staying low and accurate.
  • Striking too high or too low on the ball instead of through its center makes a short pass wobble along the ground or pop up in the air.
  • Letting the ankle go weak or floppy at the moment of contact sends the pass curving or slicing off target.
