Cross stepping

Surfing / Popular

Walk the board to the nose on a longboard.

What coaches agree on

  • Commit your weight forward onto your leading foot with each step, rather than hanging back over your rear foot.
  • Bend your knees and stay low while keeping your chest and torso tall and upright.
  • Keep your eyes up and looking ahead to where you're going, instead of staring down at your feet.
  • Keep active pressure through your toes, or your heels on the opposite rail, to hold the board's rail engaged in the wave.

Common mistakes

  • Letting a foot, usually the back foot, drift off the centerline of the board, which tips it off balance.
  • Shuffling the feet or rushing through the cross-legged step instead of committing to and holding that position.
