Generating speed

Surfing / Popular

Pump the board to build and hold speed.

What coaches agree on

  • Stay high on the wave, near the pocket, where the face is steepest and carries the most speed.
  • Pump the board by compressing your legs and weighting it as you drive down the wave face, then extending and releasing that weight as you rise back up.

  • Move your arms with your legs as you pump, dropping them as you compress and raising them as you extend, to add balance and rhythm.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the board sit flat on the water instead of carrying it from rail to rail, which creates drag and stalls your speed.
  • Pumping mainly with the front foot while the back foot stays planted and dead, dragging the tail and killing speed.
