Surf stance

Surfing / Popular

Build balance, compression, foot placement, and upper-body alignment on the board.

What coaches agree on

  • Your back foot is your steering control - slide it back toward the tail to power a turn, then bring it forward again to build speed.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the knees splay outward into a wide 'poo stance' instead of pointing them in together, which locks up the hips and blocks weight transfer.
  • Bending over at the hips with fairly straight legs to get low, instead of bending the knees - a stiff stance that kills balance and control.
  • Letting both hands drift to the toe-side rail instead of keeping the leading hand over the heel-side rail, which throws off balance and blocks turns.
