- Lay the wax down in a crosshatch of diagonal lines, one direction and then the other, and finish with circular motions until the wax rises into distinct bumps.

- Choose your wax's hardness by the water temperature you will actually be surfing in — a harder, warm-water wax for warm water and a softer, cold-water wax for cold water.
Common mistakes
- Waxing in direct sun or with a bar of wax that has gotten too hot — the wax turns soft and smudges or rubs off instead of building up into bumps.
