Butterfly Timing

Swimming / Popular

Coordinate the dolphin kick with the arm pull and breath.

What coaches agree on

  • Butterfly uses two kicks per arm cycle — one kick times with the arms exiting the water to start the recovery, and the other times with the hands entering the water to start the pull.
  • Press your chest down the instant your arms enter the water (or as you finish a breath) — this creates the wave that pikes your hips up and carries you into the next stroke.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting the head late or too high during the breath drags the hips down and stalls the arms on their way back over the water.

Coach's take: Two fine drills but thin and heavily steering you to a paid program.
