Freestyle Flip Turn

Swimming / Popular

Execute a tumble turn and streamline push-off at the wall.

What coaches agree on

  • As you flip, land on the wall at a slight angle - mostly on your back but rotated a little to the side, not flat on your back or on your front - then finish turning onto your front as you glide away.
  • Let your head lead the flip - tuck your chin and drive it down and around in a circular motion - and let your knees and legs fold in naturally behind it.

  • Keep your speed constant as you approach the wall instead of slowing down; the momentum you carry into the turn is what carries you fast off the wall.
  • Exhale in a steady stream through your nose all the way through the flip, taking your last breath just before you start the turn.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching both hands out in front of you or flailing your arms wide to muscle yourself over, instead of keeping them tucked in at your hips through the flip.
  • Looking up at the wall to judge your distance instead of using a fixed marker on the floor, which throws off your rhythm and can make you slow down, flip too early, or feel disoriented.
