Sculling Drills

Swimming / Popular

Develop feel for the water with sculling hand movements.

What coaches agree on

  • Sculling means slow, small sweeping movements rather than full strokes — the goal is to feel the water's pressure through your fingertips and forearms, not to build speed.
  • Sculling comes in several forms — front, mid, back or hip, lateral — that each isolate a different phase of your stroke, so rotate through them to train your whole pull.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your hand go flat or your elbow drop makes you push water down or away instead of backward, so you stall instead of moving forward.
