Reading spin

Table tennis / Popular

Judge spin from contact, bat angle and ball flight.

What coaches agree on

  • The clearest tell is the direction and angle of the racket at the instant it contacts the ball: a downward motion means backspin, a forward or upward motion means topspin, and a sideways motion means sidespin.
  • The ball's flight after it leaves the racket confirms it — a floaty ball that stays low is backspin, one that dips and kicks forward quickly is topspin, and one curving through the air is sidespin.

  • A fast, snapping acceleration of the arm and wrist through contact produces heavier spin, even when the ball that comes off looks slow or floaty.

Common mistakes

  • Light or medium spin gets misjudged as no spin, so players hit it flat and net the ball or push it up too high for an easy attack.
  • A forceful-looking swing gets mistaken for heavy spin, and a casual-looking one for light spin, because better players deliberately disguise their motion to draw exactly that misread.
