De la Riva guard

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Use the De la Riva hook to control and off-balance a standing opponent.

What coaches agree on

  • Get your hook foot up to your opponent's hip rather than leaving it low on the thigh - a low hook pops loose and lets them pass.
  • Angle your body out to the side of your opponent instead of staying squared up to them, so their weight can't settle straight down on you.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the De La Riva hook and grips still instead of continually off-balancing your opponent lets a good opponent feel exactly what's bothering them and work free or pass.
