How to cut off the ring

Boxing / Popular

Herd a moving opponent instead of chasing them.

What coaches agree on

  • Hold the center of the ring so your opponent is stuck circling the longer outside path while you take the shorter, straighter line to reach them.
  • Move laterally with the same-side foot leading (right foot first to move right, left foot first to move left), creeping forward a little with each step to close the distance gradually.

  • Once your opponent is on the ropes or in a corner, watch which way they try to slip out sideways and land your shot right on that exit.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing straight at your opponent or following directly behind them just lets them pivot or circle away, so you spend all your energy without ever cutting off an angle.
  • Piling on pressure or unloading your hardest shots the instant your opponent reaches the ropes lets them slip out, pivot around you, or time a counter before you have actually got them trapped.
