Footwork

Boxing / Popular

Move in, out, and laterally while staying balanced.

What coaches agree on

  • Land your stepping foot on the ground at the exact moment your punch reaches full extension, so your hands and feet arrive together.
  • Step or pivot off to an angle so you are hitting your opponent from the side, where you have both hands free to attack while they can really only defend or counter with one.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping or taking big, high-bouncing steps to cover distance instead of small grounded ones burns your legs fast and leaves you off balance and too slow to react.
  • Crossing your feet instead of moving the foot in your direction of travel first squares your hips and leaves you open.
