Head Movement & Slipping

Boxing / Popular

Slip, roll, and weave to evade punches.

What coaches agree on

  • Slipping means getting your head off the centre line - the straight line that runs from your opponent down between your feet, which is where their punches travel.
  • Move your head as you throw and again straight after your combination, so head movement is part of your attack and not something you only do on defence.

  • Let your weight settle on the side you slip toward so that hand is loaded: slip to your right and come back with the right hand, slip to your left and come back with the left.

Common mistakes

  • Over-slipping - dropping the whole body down or twisting right away from the punch - which leaves you off balance and too slow to be there for the counter.
  • Turning your head away or dropping your eyes to the floor as you move, so you lose sight of your opponent and never see the next punch.
