Lifting while pregnant

Gym (women) / Popular

Adjust load, movements and bracing through pregnancy.

What coaches agree on

  • As pregnancy progresses, lift lighter and do more reps rather than chasing maximal or near-maximal weights.
  • Adjust the setup of your lifts for your growing belly: widen your stance for squats and deadlifts, elevate the bar or box to shorten the range of motion, and move overhead presses and lying exercises like bench press to a seated or inclined position.

  • Treat pain, dizziness, or unusual discomfort during a lift as your signal to stop and check in with your healthcare provider.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the breath and bearing down hard through a lift, which spikes abdominal pressure until the belly domes outward - what these coaches call "coning."
  • Bending forward and rounding the back at the waist to pick something up, dumping the strain onto the low back instead of the legs.
