Long passing and switching play

Soccer (Individual Skills) / Popular

Strike accurate lofted and driven long passes.

What coaches agree on

  • Take your first touch a few yards away from your body and off to the side, then run up to the ball briskly - that space and momentum generate the pass's power and distance.
  • Where you strike the ball controls its flight: hit lower on the ball to loft it up and over defenders, and hit closer to the middle to keep it low and driven with more pace.

  • Aim to strike with backspin - it keeps the ball's flight straight and predictable, and makes it far easier for your teammate to control on arrival.

Common mistakes

  • A loose ankle or an off-center, dragging contact sends the pass curling or slicing off target instead of straight, especially under power.
