Breath control

Swimming / Popular

Exhale underwater and stay relaxed for beginners.

What coaches agree on

  • Breathe in only through your mouth, and breathe out underwater through your nose, your mouth, or both.
  • Stay physically loose and relaxed in the water, breathing as calmly and naturally as you do on land, since tension burns extra energy and air.
  • Build the breathing rhythm in simple stages first, such as holding the wall or standing still and blowing bubbles, before adding it into your full stroke.

Common mistakes

  • Holding your breath the whole time your face is underwater and only breathing out in a rush right as you turn to inhale, which means you never get a full, comfortable breath and end up gasping.
