How to swim without getting tired

Swimming / Popular

Pace, breathe and relax to swim further.

What coaches agree on

  • Rotate your torso onto your side with each stroke, driven by the kick, so your core and hips power the pull.
  • Let each stroke glide and extend briefly before starting the next pull, keeping your rhythm one smooth, continuous flow.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting the head to sight ahead or to breathe, which sinks the hips and legs and drags against the water -- most swimmers slip into this as they fatigue.
  • Kicking hard and continuously as if the legs were the main engine -- since the legs are the body's biggest oxygen users, this burns energy fast without adding much speed.
  • Holding the breath underwater and then gasping or exhaling explosively when turning to breathe, which lets CO2 build up and triggers a panicky need for air.
