Backhand push

Table tennis / Popular

Keep the ball low and short with a backhand push.

What coaches agree on

  • Open your racket face and brush underneath the ball rather than hitting it flat - that's what creates backspin, and the more you brush, the more spin you'll generate.
  • Make contact out in front of your body, not to the side or behind you - that's what gives you control over the ball's direction and placement.

  • Bend your knees into a low, ready stance and keep your feet active, stepping in to adjust your distance to the ball for each push.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging too hard or with too long a follow-through sends the push off the end of the table, since the ball already carries backspin and doesn't need extra pace.
