Forehand push

Table tennis / Popular

Return short backspin balls with a controlled forehand push.

What coaches agree on

  • Step in and get your weight low and forward to reach the ball, rather than standing tall and reaching for it with just your arm.
  • Open your racket face and brush underneath the ball, opening it more and brushing harder the more backspin your opponent's shot has.

Common mistakes

  • Tensing the grip and wrist, or swinging with too much force, makes the push skid off the racket with little spin and control.
  • Swinging with the whole arm or shoulder instead of a short stroke from the forearm, wrist, and fingers sends the ball flying past the end of the table.
