Backhand topspin

Table tennis / Popular

Generate backhand topspin using forearm and wrist snap.

What coaches agree on

  • Drive the shot from your legs and hips, not just your arm — bend your knees, get low, and open your hip into the ball.
  • Generate the stroke's speed and spin mainly with a quick snap of the wrist and forearm, in a short, compact motion close to your body.

  • Start the racket below the ball and brush upward through contact, finishing high — that vertical brushing action is what lifts a backspin ball over the net.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to muscle the shot with a tense, forceful arm doesn't add power — it costs you spin and sends the ball long. Stay relaxed and let the wrist do the accelerating right at contact.
