Footwork & Split Step

Tennis / Popular

Use the split step and recovery footwork to reach balls efficiently.

What coaches agree on

  • Land your split step with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and your weight forward on the balls of your feet, so your legs are loaded and ready to push off in any direction.
  • Jump into your split step facing the net squarely, with hips, shoulders and feet all pointed forward so you're equally ready to move either way, then push off toward the ball once you see where it's going.

Common mistakes

  • Landing the split step exactly as your opponent makes contact, instead of a beat after, leaves you flat-footed for the quarter-second it takes your brain to read where the ball is going.
  • Charging forward after an approach shot without split-stepping, or standing flat-footed as the point plays out, leaves you unable to change direction for a lob, a passing shot, or a ball hit at your feet.
