Camel pose

Yoga / Popular

Open the chest in Ustrasana without crunching the low back.

What coaches agree on

  • Roll your shoulders back and draw your shoulder blades together to lift and open through the chest and upper back.
  • Actively engage your inner thighs, glutes, and core; that muscular support is what protects your lower back in the backbend.
  • Keeping your hands on your lower back, or using blocks, is a complete expression of the pose; how deep you go matters far less than keeping the chest opening pain-free.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the head all the way back before the rest of the spine has opened, straining the neck or leaving you lightheaded, instead of easing it back only once the upper back is ready.
  • Dropping straight back and letting the lower back do all the bending, instead of first lengthening the spine so the backbend spreads through the whole spine.
