Butterfly guard

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Elevate and off-balance with butterfly hooks.

What coaches agree on

  • Connect to your opponent's upper body with an underhook, overhook, or belt grip, and use it to pin their far arm so they can't post their hand out.
  • Feel which way your opponent pushes or pulls against you and sweep them in that direction instead of forcing your own plan.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking for the sweep before pulling your opponent's weight on top of you leaves the sweep with no power behind it.
  • Powering the sweep from the top leg instead of the bottom leg makes your position weak and easy for your opponent to smash or stack.
  • Sitting upright with your weight leaned back, butt under your head, lets your opponent easily knock you flat and pass.
