Hip bump sweep

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Sit up and bump to reverse the position from guard.

What coaches agree on

  • Reach for the hip bump sweep when your opponent is sitting upright or leaning back — that posture is what gives you the room to sit up and generate the sweep.
  • Drive the sweep by pushing off your posted foot and lifting your hips — the power comes from your legs and hips, not your arms.

  • If your opponent posts a hand to stop the sweep, treat that arm as newly exposed and attack it — most coaches go straight for a Kimura from there.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your control on their trapped arm go loose — floating the grip instead of pinning their elbow or bicep tight to your body — is exactly what lets them post their hand flat and stop the sweep.
  • Stopping your base at your elbow instead of continuing up onto your hand — it can work against a beginner but won't generate enough hip elevation against real resistance.
