The Uppercut

Boxing / Popular

Generate upward power from the legs and core.

What coaches agree on

  • Turn your hips and pivot your rear foot as you throw - that rotation through your body is what generates the punch's power.
  • Keep your elbow and fist traveling up close to your body's centerline, in line with your hip - that alignment is what gives the shot its leverage.

Common mistakes

  • Many fighters try to rise up onto their toes to power the uppercut, when the real power comes from bending the knee and dropping your weight under the shot.
  • Loading the punch up with a big wind-up - dropping the hand low, swinging wide, or reaching above the chin - telegraphs the shot and costs power; it should stay a short, tight loop close to the body.
