Body tension

Climbing / Popular

Keep hips in and core engaged so feet stay on steep walls.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep active, continuous pressure through your foot on every hold — push or pull through it the whole time your weight is on it.
  • Bring your hips in close to the wall on steep terrain so your weight sits directly over your feet.
  • Train tension deliberately — climb a route as slowly and under control as you can, freeze briefly between moves, or set yourself boulder problems that force constant foot pressure.

Common mistakes

  • Muscling through moves by pulling with bent arms rather than driving with your legs and core — the small arm muscles fatigue fast and pull your weight straight off your feet.
