Rockover

Climbing / Popular

Transfer weight over a high foot to stand up on it.

What coaches agree on

  • Shift your hips fully over the foothold as a separate, deliberate step, and only stand up once you've reached that balance point.
  • Actively press or claw your foot into the hold - engaging your quad, glute, and hamstring - so you can drive up through your leg with real power.

  • Rocking your weight onto your legs saves your arms and grip strength, which matters most on crimpy or poor handholds.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your leading knee and toe roll inward toward the wall, instead of keeping the knee out over the toe in line with the wall, drops your heel and pushes your hips away from the wall.

Coach's take: Short, but the 'pivot fully to balance before you thrust up' cue is exactly the kind of detail that fixes a stuck rockover.
